Nivine Megahed, Ph.D., appointed 11th president of NLU

NLU’s Board of Trustees announces the appointment of Nivine Megahed, Ph.D., as the 11th president in the university’s 124-year history. Megahed, president of Kendall College in Chicago since 2006, has served as president of both IMPAC University and the University of Sarasota in Florida as well as group VP for Education Management and Kaplan, where she was responsible for 12 to 25 campuses with up to 15,000 students.

George Litman named VP of Strategic Initiatives at NLU

George Litman has been named vice president of strategic initiatives, announced NLU President Megahed. Litman has worked at NLU for over 18 years and has served in many roles including faculty, dean, deputy provost, interim provost and most recently as NLU’s interim president. “George’s breadth of experience combined with his institutional history uniquely prepares him to help us position NLU for a vibrant future,” said Megahed.

Alumna Anne McKenna is Kohl McCormick Award Recipient

Anne McKenna, NCE alumna with a master of arts in teaching degree in 2005, received a 2010 Kohl McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Award in March. She teaches second grade at Dewey Elementary in Evanston, IL. Along with this honor, she will receive a $5,000 cash award for herself; a $1,000 cash award for her school; a classroom visit from the StoryBus, a children’s museum on wheels; and a graduate-level course at Chicago’s Erikson Institute.

CTCB event selects best American picture book for children

2010 got off to an exciting start for NLU’s Center for Teaching through Children’s Books (CTCB) with two well-attended events at the Skokie campus. On January 9, CTCB held its first “Mock Caldecott.” About100 students, teachers and librarians were present for a day-long event focused on the selection process for the famous Caldecott Medal Award, annually presented to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

You’re invited to attend NLU's 2010 University Connection. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 1. In addition, the colleges and the University Library may choose to schedule faculty meetings on Thursday, September 2. The Connection will kick off on Wednesday morning at the Chicago campus and will include a number of workshops, presentations and meetings.

Two National-Louis University alumni—Aaron Reedy (at left) and Patrice Turk—were among this year’s 10 Chicago-area recipients of the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. The honorees, all high school teachers, were selected from a pool of 562 nominees.

Borthwick named new NCE associate dean

Arlene Borthwick has been named the new NCE associate dean for accreditation, curriculum and certification. She was chosen as a result of a national search for her academic and scholarly achievements, her demonstrated leadership abilities and her experience with accreditation bodies. Borthwick joined the NLU faculty in 1999 and served as department chair of Integrated Studies in Teaching, Technology, and Inquiry for the past four years. She is a member of the NCATE Board of Examiners and has served as an SPA reviewer for ISTE.

Holly Fisher wins iPad from NLU

The winner of NLU’s summer term Apple iPad drawing is Holly Fisher of McHenry, IL. Fisher is an M.S. in Counseling student at NLU’s Wheeling campus. Her name was chosen in a random drawing by NLU President Megahed on July 15 from the nearly 3,500 students enrolled in the summer term.

The 2010 Chicago-area commencement ceremony was a memorable event. The speaker and honorary degree recipient was Dr. Diana Mendley Rauner, who served for nine years on NLU’s Board of Trustees, six of those years as Chair of the Board of Trustees. The student speaker, Dawn Edwards (left), received her Master of Science degree in Counseling.

New Associate VP of Enrollment Management

Robert (Bob) Hiller has been named the new associate VP of enrollment management for NLU. He most recently served as VP of Admissions at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, a division of Career Education Corporation. In that position, he was responsible for the oversight of college-wide recruiting initiatives and partnership program development designed to target new students. Prior to Le Cordon Bleu, Hiller had worked in a variety of positions with increasing responsibility at American InterContinental University Online.
